Richard Long moved to Kent in 1991 and has lived in or close to Tonbridge since 1992. He commenced his own practice with his wife Tina in the area as commercial and property solicitors in 1997 and the practice remains based close to Tonbridge. Since Richard was appointed to a Cabinet role at KCC in 2017 Tina has taken over the majority of his professional work. He and Tina have two children, both now adults.
Richard read Classics and was active in University politics as a Conservative from 1976. He founded and chaired the South Northants Young Conservatives in 1981/2. He first stood for election as a Conservative in 1995: as a Borough Councillor for East Peckham but lost on that occasion. He was elected to KCC in 2005 and represented the Malling Rural East division between 2005 and 2013 and then the Tonbridge division from 2013. Having represented the rural area around Tonbridge Richard is familiar with many local and wider issues and with the workings of the County Council. He chaired the KCC Governance and Audit Committee between 2009 and 2017 when he was appointed Cabinet Lead for Traded Services. Upon the change of leadership of the Conservative Group and the County Council in 2019 he was appointed Cabinet Member for Education and Skills.
Richard also served an an officer in the Regular Army and Army Reserve between 1976 and 2018. Shortly after retirement as a reservist he took up the appointment of Commandant of Kent Army Cadet Force. He enjoys getting outdoors with the Cadets at weekends when possible.
He has used his community fund to help many local causes, including village halls, the Scouts, youth groups and services for families and older people in the town. One of his priorities is enhancing road safety outside schools including the provision, where appropriate, of additional pedestrian crossings. He supports the regeneration of the High Street and retail areas of Tonbridge, in partnership with the Borough Council, but does not favour pedestrianisation of the High Street.
