Michael Payne is proud to call himself a man of Kent, having been born and lived in the county all his life. He has a strong belief in service for the community stemming from first volunteering at the Community Service Group whilst at school in Tonbridge and in later life as a Tonbridge Grammar School PTA Treasurer, as well as being the former Chairman of Tonbridge and Malling Conservative Association. In the past he has also served on Tunbridge Wells Borough Council and has been both a Director and Treasurer of the National Association of Goldsmiths for six years.
In his role as Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport Michael promoted the idea of Vision Zero, the aim of working together for no fatalities on the roads of Kent in the future. He has also represented the communities of Kent at Gatwick, and on regional transport issues at Transport for the South East. He strongly believes in infrastructure first before any development is permitted to proceed, and only then should it be allowed to be undertaken in a balanced and measured way in the right locations.
Apart from his political interests Michael has had a business career spanning forty years, both running his own business in retail and establishing another in agriculture. Michael is married to Ann and has two children. His hobbies include walking and local history.
Michael says, “As a resident of Kent for my whole life I believe I understand your concerns and priorities, as these are the things that also matter to my friends and neighbours"
